Population Characteristics
Mumbai has a population larger than 20.5 million people. It is the most populous city in India and the fourth most populous city in the world. With a population that has doubled since 1991, living standards have reduced as more than 60% of the population live in slums. As a rapidly increasing megacity, problems such as; poor sanitation, higher risks of diseases and crime, traffic congestion, air, noise and land pollution, overcrowding of public transport, sewerage problems and no electricity, running water, gas or proper shelter to slum residents. Even though there are many urban problems in this city, many tourist consider the Mumbaikers, overall, very happy people who are very open to helping you when in need. |
Migration |
Many of Greater Mumbai's migration is from rural areas, most people come to the city for a better job to provide a better life for themselves and their family. This includes, better shelter, more food on the table and better education and medical facilities. Although many migrants begin living in slums, they plan to earn more money and eventually move out to an apartment with running water, gas and electricity.

Mumbai's population consists of multiple religions and languages. There are more than 16 languages spoken in India, but the most common are Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi.
